The request
“We need to upgrade our theme. We're on a really old version, before sections existed. The theme developers gave us instructions but it's more than we can handle. We don't want to lose the custom work.”
The gap between their version and current was large enough that the theme's internal structure had changed. A straight update would have wiped out every customization made since purchase.
The approach
We installed the current theme version on a duplicate, then went through the old theme's customizations one by one and recreated each on the new version. Anything the new theme now handled natively we removed rather than carried forward.
The brand reviewed the duplicate before we published it, and we kept the old theme available as a rollback.
What we shipped
Theme updated to current version
All customizations carried over and reviewed
Redundant customizations removed where the new theme covered them
Old theme preserved as rollback
